In my debates about marriage and having children, many of the Marriage Mandate girls always inject politics into the issue. In reality, it doesn't matter if you lean right or left, just as long as you always strive to be a good Christian. Isn't this what we look for in someone we want to spend our lives with?
I've heard the point that typical protestants should marry and pump out as many children as possible so Republicans will get elected in the future. What does this mean? - that all Western Protestant Calvinist Evangelicals vote Republican every time; and this is what we all want?
I think a distinction needs to be made here. What is the essence of being Christian? Is it traditional Indian matchmaking? Is it the hurried mass-production of Calvinist children? Is it marriage at all costs?
Where is all this attitude about prosperity and the "right" political views coming from?
Hmm....
Years ago, the Reverend Robert Schuller got in trouble on a flight for being too pushy with a flight attendant. Recently, Olsteens got in trouble for the same thing. It seems many evangelicals and mainline protestants are so deeply mixed up in prosperity theology and positive thinking that they become hardcore Christian narcissists. It is reflected in how they treat others, their behavior toward people of other faiths, political persuasions - even color of skin. There is something deeply wrong with the faith if wealth, the right politics, the right zip code and how fast one marries are all the key factors. Isn't the measure of a practicing Christian (at least) the evidence of simple decency? Or - is being a true Christian being a blue-blood right-wing Christian conservative?
Welcome to Christianity! By the way, you can't be a member unless you have an American Express Platinum Card and live in the right neighborhood!
I can't believe God is happy with Schuller, Olsteen, or any of the Marriage Mandate preachers. Narcissism and positive thinking aren't the heart of Christianity. Of course it is all part of the greater marketing efforts toward women most churches have adopted. It seems to be working well. There are more and more rich televangelists every day.
Maybe Christianity is only for those who live in the most expensive zip codes in the country? for those who only vote Republican? And for those who aren't married, are they actively "in sin" ? Are they consciously "stealing" a husband from a lonely woman? If they aren't earning enough, is that a failure of right-wing Calvinist Protestant prosperity theology rules?
It becomes clear why so many men simply give up and walk away, and the ranks of women in churches continues to grow.

I gave up and walked away. I still believe in God, but no longer consider myself a believer in Jesus. Not much choice really. "By their fruits ye shall know them." Well, all the fruits I saw in church were kinda rotten, so I just backed away. Church after church was the same thing, and the women were pretty much all phony, narcissistic, arrogant and superficial. The men were just as bad. I trust GOD from now on, not man-made religion. No offense meant to anyone of any faith.
If God wants me as a Christian, then possibly He could explain why Christianity has become so worldly and evil.
MLV,
I have to wonder how well some professing Christians REALLY know their Bibles; I really do. Why? Because, II Chron. 7:14 makes it ABUNDANTLY CLEAR that we're to turn to God for healing our land, not man! The aforementioned verse says, "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, THEN (emphasis mine) will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." THAT is the answer right there...
A lot of these clowns preach the message that, if we can just get the right men elected, all will be peachy. Uh, the Republicans took over in 1994, thanks to the efforts of Robertson, Dobson, et al; did things get any better or worse in the interim? I think we ALL know the answer to that one! Shoot, most of those bastards sold out, becoming indistinguishable from their Democrat counterparts.
Christians should be ashamed of themselves! If we want the answer it's in the Bible. If we follow what The Good Book says, then we are to , according to II Chron. 7:14, "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, THEN (emphasis mine) will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." If we do what God says, then He WILL heal our land-end of story. Unfortunately, working to 'get the right guys in office' is not part of that equation...

markymark,
There is nothing humble about the politically active, living-in-gated-communities Christians. They feel they are the only people going to Heaven.
I'll never stop being Christian, but I sure don't go to church anymore. Like they say, it's women everywhere and all want to get married. Of course I'm not good enough because I'm not a professional. So since I'm not married and not rich enough I get snubbed so much I just gave up. I got too depressed dealing with women and my church. I read my Bible every Sunday, go for a walk and talk to Jesus, and then come home and play video games and blow up the enemy. All and all a spiritual experience far better than what I was having. i feel closer to the Lord when I'm playing war games than when I was in church. I'm 23, and I suppose I don't know any better. Luckily my parents indulge my fun.
